Alumni/Student Mentor Program

The Mentor Program sponsored by the UConn School of Social Work Alumni Association provides current SSW students or alumni the opportunity to be matched with an alumni mentor. Volunteers are requested to make a one year commitment with the option to extend the arrangement to two years if agreed upon by both the mentor and mentee.

Purpose

The Mentor Program is a voluntary program designed to match current graduate students or alumni with alumni mentors to discuss issues such as balancing professional development with academics and family demands, guidance with career choice, job hunting ideas, etc. This is not meant to serve as a supervisory relationship, but rather one that is supportive and collegial.

Mentors and mentees are solely responsible for all legal and ethical matters involving their relationships.

Who are the Mentors?

The Mentors are a group of alumni who have expressed interest in giving back and supporting current graduate students or alumni going through the academic process and beyond. They are a diverse group who represent all of the concentration areas.

Guidelines

What are the expectations of the Mentee?

  • Explain the areas where you would like guidance
  • Have a minimum of bi-monthly contact with your mentor
  • Complete a feedback form regarding the program, if requested

Where do I start?

To become a mentor and as a student or alumnus requesting a mentor, you begin by completing a brief application. This provides the information needed to coordinate a match.

Once a match is made, the mentor is expected to make contact with the mentee.  It is recommended that initial contact be made via telephone. If for any reason either individual thinks the match is not a good one, another match will be made, if available. In this situation, contact the SSW Alumni Relations Office. Upon making initial contact, the mentee should provide additional information outlining what they are specifically hoping to gain through the mentee-mentor relationship. Both parties should develop a tentative schedule based on availability and desired form of contact.
