The Convocation on Cultural Competence is part of the student’s orientation to the social work profession and is held annually for new incoming students. This program is a means to emphasize the School’s commitment to the profession’s Standards for Cultural Competence. This experience will help students understand the definition of cultural competence, how to work effectively within a wide range of human diversity including culture, race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, socio-economic status, age, etc., and to initiate self-reflection. In this program, students will learn:
- To understand issues of power, social location, and other basics of culturally competent social work practice.
- The value of understanding themselves in relation to culture and family for culturally competent social work practice.
The Convocation on Cultural Competence is required of all incoming students and will be held on Friday, August 25, 2017 from 9 to 11 am, location-TBA. Students who are not in attendance will be required to do a written assignment. All newly admitted students are required to attend the entire program.
