Advanced Standing

For those who have achieved a high level of academic performance in both class and field work practice during your undergraduate social work studies, we offer a special designation called Advanced Standing. Advanced Standing is designed for individuals who have graduated within the last six years from an undergraduate social work program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). If you qualify, you'll begin the MSW program early, in August, before the majority of other students enter classes.

How It Works

The program begins in August with an intensive four week session where you complete five credits. After successful completion of summer courses, you will join the second year of the two-year program. You will complete an internship (560 hours, 9 credits including a one-credit, year-long field education seminar) as part of the advanced year required courses and electives. You should be prepared for full-time study and not to work full-time or to do an employed social work placement.

A Methods-based Approach

The UConn School of Social Work is unique in offering you the opportunity to pursue a methods-based specialization in social work practice. Here, you will choose an area of concentration: Casework; Group Work; Community Organization; Administration; or Policy Practice. Within your chosen area, you will learn specific skills and practices as they apply to a variety of professional settings. Through our practice-based approach, you will gain the knowledge to help people achieve more satisfying lives as individuals, in family relationships, and in group and community settings, all with a focus on social justice, equal opportunity and economic well being.
