Kyle Pinto talks about why he chose the Administration ConcentrationThe Administration Concentration prepares experienced social work students for middle and top administrative positions in human service agencies, and other leadership positions in the social work profession. The concentration strives to prepare women and men who are able to envision, direct, plan, and evaluate agency services to improve the welfare of clients and the community. Students learn to apply technical, managerial, interpersonal and administrative knowledge to agency responsibilities; articulate a sound philosophy about society and its needs; effectively approach modern image management, including the use of technology and other methods for media relations; offer leadership in the profession of social work and in the community; operate within the code of professional ethics as individuals and as representatives of organizations; and remain committed to a lifetime of learning. Students are viewed as both social workers and administrators. This underlies our concept of the social work administrator as one who 1) creates a climate and conditions that are supportive and responsive to people’s need for human services; and 2) develops an organizational environment that is creative and innovative, in which staff can grow personally and professionally.Career opportunities for social work administrators include positions as executive directors, program directors, project coordinators, supervisors, and staff development directors, in the human service agencies of state and local governments and in a variety of private, nonprofit social service agencies. Graduates offer leadership in diverse fields including health, child welfare, aging, mental health, women’s services, family services, and corporate social responsibility.
