Fieldwork Placement

INTD 3590. Urban Field Studies

Either semester. Nine credits. Hours by arrangement. Open only to students in the program. Consent of the director of the Urban Semester Program required. Must be taken concurrently with INTD 3584 and 3594.

Students choose fieldwork in Hartford organizations that meet their interests. The Program Director assists each student in understanding the activities of internship sites and deciding which placement best meets her or his needs. Students have full choice in selecting the internship. They spend 3-1/2 days a week in fieldwork and are supervised by agency staff. The Program Director in consultation with the agency staff evaluates students’ performance. Students are required to analyze their experiences in written journals. A 2-1/2 day per week 6 credit option is available in consultation with the Program Director.

Seminars

Students are required to participate in two three-credit seminars that meet weekly. The Fieldwork Seminar (INTD 3594) allows students the opportunity to consider theories and apply these concepts to their internships. INTD 3594 is available for “W” credit. The Urban Problems Seminar (INTD 3584) focuses on specific urban issues with emphasis on contemporary problems in Hartford. The seminars increase students’ knowledge about issues facing urban areas and how Hartford’s social service organizations and political bodies respond. Classes are held at the UConn West Hartford campus.

INTD 3584. Seminar in Urban Problems

Either semester. Three credits. Hours by arrangement. Open only to students in the program. Consent of the director of the Urban Semester Program required. Must be taken concurrently with INTD 3590 and 3594.

Discussions based upon assigned readings and led by invited speakers from within the University. CA 4.

INTD 3594. Urban Semester Field Work Seminar

Either semester. Three credits. Hours by arrangement. Open only to students in the program. Consent of the director of the Urban Semester Program required. Must be taken concurrently with INTD 3590 and 3584.

Students make analytic presentations of their field experiences, relating these to the pertinent available literature. Particular urban problems are discussed with invited experts from outside the University.

INTD 3594W. Urban Semester Field Work Seminar

Prerequisite: ENGL 1010 or 1011 or 3800. Open only to students in the program. Consent of the director of the Urban Semester Program required. Must be taken concurrently with INTD 35903584. and

Housing

Students live together in apartments in Hartford rented by the University for program participants, enabling them to collectively share the experience of the city. Housing costs equal the standard campus dormitory room fee. Students are responsible for their own meal arrangements.
