Karen Futoma MSW ’90 Named Director of Newington Department of Human Services

Karen Futoma has worked for Newington town human services for the past 27 years. She grew up in Newington, CT and volunteered at the VA Hospital when she was in high school. Her interest in social work began at a young age.

Karen received her master’s degree in social work from the UConn School of Social Work in 1990 and worked for Hartford social services from 1981 until accepting a Social Worker II position with the Town of Newington in 1985.

In 1986 she became the financial casework coordinator, a position she held until being named director. “I love the fact that I’m working in a community I grew up in and know,” she said. “Giving back to the community is very rewarding.”

Karen supervises seven staff and oversees a budget of about $470,000. She says the biggest challenge facing the department is “doing more with less” as budgets are cut. She said an important part of the job is finding other resources, such as grants, to help meet the needs of the town.

Karen is married to a fellow human service professional and has 3 daughters. Her oldest is a certified secondary education teacher, her middle daughter is studying to be a guidance counselor and her third is in high school and interested in pursuing digital graphic design.
