Supervision in the behavioral healthcare field has become increasingly complicated as agencies employ staff from a diversity of disciplines, educational and experience levels, and multi-cultural backgrounds with a multiplicity of ethical codes. These trends press the conscientious supervisor to maintain the traditional ethical boundaries of care while adjusting to situations created in a “managed care” work environment.

Clinical supervision is a critical part of the counseling process. It requires special thought, careful preparation, and an approach tailored to the individual strengths and area for growth of the supervisee. This seminar will examine the ethical issues and responsibilities of the clinical supervisor and discuss specific skills to provide effective supervision. Participants will have the opportunity to conduct an ethical practices risk assessment of their agency. This seminar is intended for people who are currently providing supervision. Dr. Broffman will present theories and concepts that require supervisory clinical experience and knowledge to successfully integrate them with clinical practice

At the conclusion of this seminar, participants will be able to:

  • define ethics in terms of its component parts across the various human service disciplines; values, beliefs, duties, & rules
  • develop a personal approach to ethical decision-making in behavioral health care practice that recognizes issues unique to the participant’s professional field (i.e. social work, psychology, rehab counseling, etc.), agency & client population
  • understand the evolution of supervisory ethical issues in the behavioral health field from a historical perspective
  • understand the process for becoming “ethically sensitive” supervisor and resources as a supervisor to help their therapist/counselor
  • increase their knowledge of ethical principles applied in the client/counselor relationship
  • continue to develop and to improve skills in ethical decision-making
