Applicants to the Doctoral Program in Social Work must meet the following criteria:
- Have an MSW with a grade point average of 3.0 or better from a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education*;
- Have a bachelor’s degree with a grade point average of 3.0 or better from an accredited college;
- Have a minimum of two years post MSW experience in social work*;
- Have values consistent with the profession of social work
*Individuals whose backgrounds do not match these specific requirements may also be considered for admission on a case by case basis, pending the committee’s review of applicants’ prior training and career experience.
Applicants to the PhD Program will be evaluated based on several criteria, including but not limited to applicant’s potential for scholarship, knowledge, research, commitment and promise, conceptual and analytical skills, commitment to diversity and disadvantaged populations, letters of reference, professional experience and potential for success in the program.

The Application Process
UConn School of Social Work uses an online self-managed application process. This process places the responsibility on the applicant for the collection and submission of all documents.
The application requires:
- General Application Information – Personal, Enrollment, Citizenship, Educational Institutions, and Employment Experience.
- Recommendations – Three professional references
- Personal Statement
- Curriculum Vita
- Writing Sample
- Residence Affidavit
- Test Scores – GRE
International Applicants must also provide:
- Test Scores – TOEFL

Communication and Admission Notification
Communication with applicants regarding status of applications, requests for additional or missing information, and application decisions will be sent by email. Each applicant must provide a valid email address on the electronic application and maintain that address throughout the application process. Please be certain to check your SPAM/Trash folders to ensure you do not overlook any UConn emails.
You will receive frequent communication from both the UConn Graduate School and the UConn School of Social Work throughout the time as an applicant and an accepted student. It is important that all communication is reviewed and responded to in a timely manner.
Applicant Decision Notification
School of Social Work faculty review all completed applications and makes admission decisions. When a decision has been made, you will receive an email notification to check your account to view the decision. Applicants will be notified of decisions no later than early April. No deferment of admission is permitted.
