Applying for Graduation

Students must apply for graduation by logging into their student administration account and selecting the appropriate dropdown box, entitled “Apply for Graduation” located in the student center. This should be done in the semester you plan to graduate. If you want to double check to ensure your submission was received, you can try and apply again and if you cannot you are all set.

Financial Aid

Student Exit Counseling

Students who have borrowed a Federal Perkins, Federal Stafford or Federal Graduate PLUS Loan are required to complete Exit Counseling shortly before graduating, leaving school, or dropping below half-time status.

Federal Stafford and/or Federal Graduate PLUS Loan borrowers

Click on the link below if you borrowed a Federal Stafford and/or Federal Graduate PLUS loan while at UConn. One exit counseling session will satisfy the requirements for both of these loan types.

Note: Federal Stafford and Federal Graduate PLUS Loan borrowers must complete their Exit Counseling online through

. Once on the website, click the “Sign In” link, then the “Complete Counseling” link, then the “Exit Counseling” link and follow the instructions. Be sure to select the University of Connecticut (school code 00141700 for all borrowers, including School of Law and Social Work students). Once you are finished, you will be required to complete biographical information that will be transmitted electronically to the school and your loan guarantor or loan servicer. Be sure to print the confirmation page you will receive at the end of the online counseling session.

Reader Card

MSW students who plan to attend the SSW Recognition Ceremony must obtain a reader card from their student mailboxes located on the second floor the week of March 7th Please complete by printing your information clearly on the card. This card will be used to help the MSW Program Director pronounce each student’s name correctly and will allow your graduation pictures to be mailed to the appropriate address. Please bring completed cards to Office of Student and Academic Services (OSAS) no later than March 25, 2016.


The School of Social Work Recognition Ceremony is a special unofficial ceremony, which is a wonderful way to celebrate your accomplishments with your peers, family and friends. The Ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts. Each MSW graduate is recognized on stage and hooded by members of the School of Social Work faculty. PhD students are recognized by the Zachs Chair of Social Work. December 2015, May 2016 and August 2016 graduates including approved summer block students can participate in this ceremony. Academic Regalia (Gown, Cap and Hood)

By participating in the Recognition or Commencement ceremony, you are required to wear the appropriate cap, gown, and hood that correspond with the University of Connecticut graduate degree being conferred. The cost of the regalia is $59.99 plus tax. Please order your regalia from the Greater Hartford UConn Co-op by April 15th. You will also need to pick up your regalia from the Greater Hartford UConn Co-op. Please order early in case you require a custom gown, sizing of gowns by UConn Co-op staff is available in person.

Master’s participants will be hooded by faculty during the ceremony. The hood should be neatly folded over the candidate’s left arm throughout the ceremony, until you are hooded.

The Greater Hartford UConn Co-op will be having a Grad Fair on Tuesday, March 29th from 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Students will be able to order and try on regalia, view and purchase diploma frames at a special discount that day only and they will have some Class of 2016 merchandise. The Co-op also carries School of Social Work merchandise year-round such as clothing and mugs. Students don’t have to order their cap and gown at the Grad Fair as you can do it in advance starting after Spring Break by stopping by the Greater Hartford Co-op. Keep an eye on your UConn email for more information.

The Co-op’s hours are Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Spring Break hours will be Monday – Thursday 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Please call 860.570.9197 for any questions.

Guest Tickets and Guest Accommodations

Each student will receive 4 tickets. A license or school ID must be presented when picking up your tickets. Tickets can be picked up on Friday, April 1, 2016 from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. or 11:00 to 12:30 p.m. in the School of Social Work lobby. Tickets are issued on a first-come, first served basis and will be issued from the front of theater to the back consecutively. Please note some ticket sets may be in pairs instead of 4 in a row, but will be as close to each other as possible.

Prior to picking up your tickets, special accommodations, if needed, will need to be given to the Office of Student and Academic Services (OSAS) by March 11th. Please email specifying if the individual will be using a walker, wheelchair or has limited mobility and cannot walk stairs. Accessible seating is not guaranteed on the day of graduation.

Additional Ticket – If additional tickets are available, one additional ticket will be given to students on a first come, first served basis. Please be mindful that the additional ticket being issued will not be seated by the original seats that were assigned to you. An email will be sent by the Office of Student and Academic Services notifying students if extra tickets are available.

Lost Ticket/s – If you happen to lose a ticket that was issued to you for graduation please be prepared to provide your name and the number on your envelope, as well as the numbers of the other tickets you have in your possession. Please contact the Office of Student and Academic Services at 860-570-9049 if you lose a ticket/s. After April 22nd, then call the Bushnell Box Office at 860-987-5900 regarding your lost ticket.

Babes-In-Arms – All patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket in order to gain entry into the venue. This means every single physical body needs a ticket, even infants.

From the North or South
, take I-91 to Exit 29A (Capitol Area). Go halfway around the rotary, and bear right onto Elm Street. Take the first left onto West Street. Turn right onto Capitol Avenue and continue one block to The Bushnell.

From the East, take I-84 West to Exit 50 (Main Street). At the second light, turn left onto Main Street. At the tenth light, turn right onto Capitol Avenue. Continue three blocks to The Bushnell.

From the West, take I-84 East to Exit 48B (Capitol Avenue/Asylum Street). Bear right onto Capitol Avenue. At the light, turn left onto Capitol Avenue. Continue one block to The Bushnell.


Secure parking is available directly across the street in the State of Connecticut parking lots along Capitol Avenue. Please look for prominently displayed signage. Spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Valet Parking is available at a cost of $10 per vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wear a graduation stole?

Students are able to wear a stole of their choice. The School does not facilitate this process; however, there are a few GSO sub-organizations who do such as PRIDE, LASO and OBSWS. Please refer to

Does the School recognize academic honors?

No, academic honors are not recognized.

When do I receive my diploma? How will this affect my application for licensing?

Once grades are posted, the Graduate School will begin the auditing process to ensure the requirements for the MSW degree have been met. Since there are a number of Graduate programs and schools being reviewed, the conferral process will take some time.

Conferrals of May graduates are expected to be completed in early July and August graduates is early fall. Unfortunately, you cannot sit for the LMSW exam until your degree is conferred. We encourage you to continue to check your transcript since the conferral will be posted directly onto your transcript. Once conferred, if you wish to request an official transcript please review the information at the following link

Expected time of diploma mailing from the main campus in Storrs is mid-fall for May graduates.

How can I prove I have met my graduation requirements prior to receiving my diploma?

Once all final spring grades are submitted and processed, conferrals will be documented on each student’s academic transcript. Official transcripts can be requested through the UConn Student Administration System or at this link

How long does the ceremony last?

Approximately 2 hours

What time should I arrive?

Please plan to arrive no later than 8:45 a.m. The Bushnell Café will be open if you wish to purchase light refreshments.

What should I bring with me to the ceremony?

Limited items should be carried since there will be no place to store items. Please leave personal items with family.

What should I do when I arrive?

Students are required to check in at the registration table to pick up your reader card. PhD students do not pick reader cards. Proceed to the Great Hall room to mix, mingle and take pictures with your peers. Family and friends are not allowed in this area.

How will the graduates be lined up for the processional?

Students will be lined up by method (administration, casework, community organization, group work and policy practice). Once that is done, there is no particular order students need to be in for the processional.

Where will the graduates be seated during the ceremony?

The students will be located in the theater audience.

How will students be recognized?

PhD students will be recognized by the Zachs Director and MSW students will be called by method and will line up accordingly to be recognized. You will give Dr. Brenda Kurz, MSW Program Director, your reader card that you will receive upon check-in. As you are being announced you will be hooded by faculty. Staff will be available to assist with this process.

What time should my guests arrive?

Admission for seating of guests is at 9:30 a.m.
